An Account of Surprising Generosity: When a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dorm Ground
Back in 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I figured to arrange lodging when I arrived, yet once I got there, a major event was happening and every single backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were fully booked.
As a visitor from Singapore, I thought maybe I could bed down in the airport – but quickly found the local airport, not like the one back home, is not open 24 hours. Unsure of how to proceed and growing worried, I hopped on a bus into town and began walking in the direction of the casino, believing I might spend the evening somewhere that stayed open through the night. This was not ideal in the best shape for acing an interview the next morning, but as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
We could all use more people with such compassion.
I must have looked lost because a female student noticed me walking aimlessly through downtown and inquired if everything was alright. I shared my situation and without hesitation she suggested I could sleep on a spare mattress of her dormitory at the local university – an ideal turn of events, considering that was where my medical school interview would take place the next morning. She even offered a meal: one sandwiches she brought back her work shift. I was able to use a hot shower and a secure location to rest to spend the night.
With hindsight, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she undertook as a woman inviting a man who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. Back then I operated under my own unawareness and not even thinking to the potential danger. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she did that – but still deeply appreciative.
I never did go to the Australian National University, and I never saw that kind stranger again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of generosity. My sincere desire is that karma has returned her generosity tenfold. The world needs more individuals with such compassion.
