California's Governor Confirms He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he plans to determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections are over.

"Yes, it would be dishonest if I denied it," the governor remarked when questioned about contemplating a White House bid post the 2026 elections. "I'd just be lying. And I can't do that."

Newsom's current term as governor wraps up in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. But, he cautioned that any decision is not imminent.

"The future will decide," he said.

Rising Profile as a Administration Opponent

The California governor has stepped forward as a high-profile critic of the Trump administration, employing his social media accounts and championing a initiative that would boost Democratic representation in Congress in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This action has made him a target from adversaries.

Federal Funding Dispute

The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a recent segment on a major news network. Duffy disclosed intentions to cut government money from California and threatened eliminating the state's ability to issue commercial driver's licenses.

"I plan to withdraw $160 million from California," he said, following a recently reported fatal crash in the state involving an undocumented semi truck driver that led to loss of life and casualties.

His administration noted that the U.S. government had renewed the driver's employment on several occasions, which enabled him to obtain a CDL under federal law.

The transportation secretary had earlier indicated he was holding back additional funds from the state for ignoring English language requirements for truck drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Administration

"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand national statutes," the governor's team said in a previous release countering the funding warnings. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we rely on data: California truck drivers had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."

Polling Data and Campaign Considerations

A this month's survey showed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and 48% of all registered voters indicated that the governor must consider running for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, public support for the governor has risen to an average of a third from around 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an mean of more than 40% to current figures.

Earlier this year, Newsom remarked while visiting several battleground states that he had "no idea" about his future for 2028.

He also referenced his past difficulties, including being found to have a learning disability at the early childhood.

"The notion that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – the idea that you would even throw that out is, by itself, extraordinary," he stated. "It's anyone's guess? I await who presents themselves in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the voters."
