Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials expressed outrage after former President Donald Trump charged a group of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and stated they should be detained and punished "with execution" following their release of a controversial video.

The Recording That Provoked the Debate

The clip, published on Tuesday, includes six Democratic lawmakers who previously acted in military or intelligence capacities.

"As we did, you all took an oath to defend and defend this founding document," the representatives affirmed in the brief video. "And right now, the dangers to our democratic foundation aren't just from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our laws are explicit, you can reject improper directives, you can reject unlawful commands, you must reject unlawful commands. No one has to execute orders that break the statutes or our constitution."

Trump's Incensed Reply

The clip reportedly trigger a furious reaction from the former president.

On later in the week, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another post, he wrote: "This constitutes really serious, and Harmful to our Nation. Their comments cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Officials React

Following Trump's comments on Thursday, House Democratic leader published a combined declaration censuring the comments.

"Political violence has no place in the United States," they wrote. "Congress members who were featured in the video all worked our United States with great loyalty and honor. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's disgusting and risky calls for execution against elected officials, and appeal to GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."

The opposition officials also said that they had been in touch with protective services "to guarantee the safety of these members and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must immediately take down these extreme social media posts and withdraw his aggressive rhetoric before he leads to violence," the declaration continued.

Representatives' Defiant Answer

The officials who appeared in the video also issued a declaration.

"We are former service members and defense specialists who value this nation and swore an pledge to safeguard and defend the founding document of the United States," they declared. "This commitment is permanent, and we plan to maintain it. No warning, intimidation, or incitement will deter us from that important duty."

"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president views it liable to punishment by execution for us to repeat the law," they stated. "Armed forces members should know that we have their support as they execute their oath to the founding principles and obligation to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."

They added: "Every American must come together and denounce the president's demands for our murder and political violence. This is a period for ethical certainty."

Further Political Responses

The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's remarks and published on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is requesting the execution of government members."

He added: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this without delay and unconditionally."

The Republican House speaker supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have important representatives of Congress telling military personnel to ignore directives, I think that is without precedent in the nation's past."

The GOP official also reportedly stated to media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the crime of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to parse the language and establish all that."

Executive Branch Response

During a executive branch meeting on that day, when inquired by a media member, "Is the president want to execute members of Congress?", the White House press secretary answered: "No."

"Let's be clear about what the former president is addressing," the official stated. "There are current representatives of the American legislature who coordinated to arrange a video message to individuals of the national defense, to serving soldiers urging them to defy the commander in chief's legal commands."

She said: "The integrity of our armed forces depends on the hierarchy, and if that system is compromised, it can result in people getting killed, it can cause disorder, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are essentially supporting."
