We are verifying video footage and photographs shared this morning that show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to check the site of where the pictures were from relied on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.
Locating other structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
