A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been murdered in the country's largest city Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country grappling with persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the city centre on a Tuesday afternoon.

Officials stated the 40-year-old media personality was approached by three individuals, with one shot at him before escaping on foot.

The reason of the attack has not been established and no one has been arrested have taken place, as per the official statement.

Law enforcement indicated that Stock was attacked as he was departing from a premises close to the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the site supervising the implementation of safety equipment, which had been illegally inhabited by squatters, as per local media.

"The report indicates the man was approached by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they shot at him before escaping on foot," authorities said.

Surveillance tape reportedly captured a man with dreadlocked hair and wearing what resembled a security uniform shooting on Stock before running away.

The DJ tried to run away after he was hit but fell down across the street.

It was further revealed that Stock had an weapon on his person and no items were stolen during the attack.

Important clues, like spent shells, were recovered from the location.

Officials are asking members of the public who may have seen the suspects to come forward.

"We know they covered significant ground after the shooting, and police have been following their trail to find their location," added an official.

"I am devastated. I am shattered," were her words.
