Violent incident at school
Schools in Nigeria's northern region have repeatedly come under attack for armed groups

Weapon-carrying attackers have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, according to police.

The armed faction invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, officials stated.

The armed individuals "confronted officers on duty in a gun duel" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their hostel, an official report indicated.

One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now receiving treatment.

Witnesses reported a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who came shooting randomly to cause panic.

Area inhabitants told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.

The police said they had deployed "extra specialized police forces, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.

A organized locating and saving mission is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.

In the past few years, schools in northern Nigeria have regularly come under attack for weapon-carrying factions, who frequently execute kidnappings to demand financial compensation or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The attack in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge troubling the locality, causing relatives in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they anticipate and pray for their daughters' safe return.

Security crisis in Nigeria's northern territories has intensified significantly in the past few months, with educational institutions suffering the most of the unrest.
