The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman containing several human souls inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct souls, all possessing unique fears and drives. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips show the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are specific to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the lobby have large blooms where their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, because each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
