On the eve of his half-decade plus one year as manager, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his longevity in North London is fundamentally dependent to achieving success.

A Look Back: From Appointment to Present

Arteta assumed control on the 20th of December in 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup victory not long after. Yet, that first major trophy stands as his sole significant piece of silverware following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Yes,” the manager said in response to a query about his future past 2027. “Yet it's about today. And a lot of things must occur in the next few months as well to deserve that opportunity.”

This weekend sees the six-year milestone with a match versus Everton, the identical team Arsenal faced just after his hiring was confirmed.

The Current Landscape

Given that second-placed Manchester City playing against West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal face being knocked off the summit in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This comes despite Arteta overseeing a squad that has endured in excess of one hundred injury setbacks since the start of last season.

The manager is tied down by 18 months remaining on the extension he agreed to in 2024, however, he knows that he must deliver in the immediate future.

The Manager's Mandate

The manager expanded, emphasizing the constant necessity to justify his role. “In my view a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you address the media, how you enter the dressing room, the signal you send.”

He stated further, praising the unwavering support from the hierarchy, but pinpointing the team's buy-in as most crucial. “At the end, the critical component are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, desire to learn and give their all to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

Arsenal faces the weekend fixture managing a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a strain that is anticipated to keep him out for several weeks.

A Different Club

Despite the availability issues and the high-stakes environment, Arteta feels the club's “focus and dialogue” are vastly different from when he began his reign.

The manager referenced the squad's displays as evidence of progress. “Examine the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the standard we operate at.”

Arteta concluded, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our ambition is to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
