The megacity Wakes Up to Dangerous Pollution Post Festival of Lights
On Tuesday morning residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves breathing severely hazardous air that fell into the "severe" range.
Record-Breaking Pollution Measurements
Various sections of the city showed an AQI exceeding 500, which represents 10x the healthy limit set by the World Health Organization.
Particular areas, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of eighteen hundred, representing fifteen to twenty times above healthy standards.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and New Changes
Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the dangerous pollution that engulfs the capital as the cold season begins.
Nevertheless recently, the current local administration petitioned the highest court to request a modification of the restrictions.
Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously questioned by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a balance between "heritage and environment".
Judicial Ruling and Reality
Much to the frustration of public health and environmental activists, judicial authorities complied with the proposal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be ignited during limited time windows throughout the celebrations.
On Monday night, there was considerable flouting of the time restrictions across the city, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener type.
Many recording stations throughout the city registered air quality reaching highest levels around the night hours to the most severe measurements recorded during celebrations in at least recent memory.
International Implications
The widespread use of firecrackers during the celebrations also sparked a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming worsening pollution levels in Lahore on contaminants traveling from across the border following the events.
Long-Standing Pollution Problem
Extremely elevated readings of pollution in the capital have remained as a significant issue for more than 15 years, with the situation gradually deteriorating.
Near Diwali, the amount of hazardous particulate matter in the air has been documented to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the most severe readings ever recorded in Beijing, which was previously considered as the world's most polluted city.
Various Contamination Factors
The problem in the city is attributed to a mix of different contributors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, construction activities, rubbish burning and haze from agricultural fires in neighbouring states of farming communities.
Within these states, agricultural workers illegally ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, creating toxic haze that then gets trapped over the city as winter air descends.
Health and Financial Toll
Public health and economic toll on the nearly 33 million residents residing in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to numerous investigations.
This pollution leads to increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, and can result in malignancies.
Environmental contamination is estimated to be responsible for ten thousand premature mortalities per year in the capital.
