The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track

This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

All in all, the intro looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the music selection.

The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one released by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.

Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some changes and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as among these.

The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
