This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami Dade County Leader.
Although not quite at the identical stature as pardoning holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life without fear.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a first responder, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “6-7” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently made “6-7” its 2025 word of the year.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the character of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Each year, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and cafecito as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
