Trump Welcomes Loved Ones of Shot National Guard Members to the White House
President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he has extended an invitation the loved ones of a Guard member tragically killed last week to visit the executive mansion.
He noted that he spoke to her parents and they were “devastated”.
Background on the Devastating Event
Specialist Beckstrom, 20, was killed in a violent incident on last Wednesday in the nation's capital.
Her colleague, Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Vigils across West Virginia have been held in their memory.
White House Invitation
The commander-in-chief explained he’s proposed a meeting at the presidential residence for the families of both soldiers of the West Virginia National Guard.
“I stated: ‘When you’re able, because that’s a hard experience, arrive at the White House. We’re going to recognize her,” the president told the press. “And likewise with Andrew, no matter the outcome.”
Public Response
Attendees gathered over the past few days at the high school in West Virginia to pay respects to Beckstrom.
Both they had been fulfilling duties with the state guard as part of the president’s federal initiative to aid public safety in the capital.
Remembering Sarah Beckstrom
“She was the individual that instructors desired. She behaved with calm resilience, a contagious smile and a positive energy that lifted people around her,” Hankins, the principal of her former high school, informed the press. “She was sweet, considerate and always ready to support those in need.”
Funeral arrangements for Beckstrom are still being arranged.
Judicial Actions and Government Adjustments
Officials have accused a twenty-nine-year-old Afghan national with one count of murder and charges of assault with intent to kill while armed.
The incident caused the administration to pause asylum applications and temporarily stop issuing visas to holders of passports from Afghanistan.
Status of Andrew Wolfe
Wolfe, a native of the city, enlisted in 2019 and is a graduate of his local high school, as reported by the AP.
He is still undergoing care and is “in a critical fight”, the state’s governor Morrisey mentioned on a news program.
The state’s top lawyer the attorney general told a news show that she aimed to visit Wolfe’s family.
Impact of Sarah Beckstrom
Sarah, from her hometown, graduated from Webster County High in June 2023 and enlisted soon after, serving as a military police officer with distinction, as stated by the military.
“She had a lot of compassion and she absolutely had courage,” Morrisey addressed the gathering at the service. “Though her time was cut short, she has left a mark that’s going to endure.”
