Scorching conditions and raging wildfires have swept through the dry landscape of Western Australia. With mercury levels expected to continue climbing above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a major heatwave warning has been issued across much of the southwestern region.

This situation follow recent fires in New South Wales, which caused the loss of homes and fatalities. Severe heat alerts have additionally been issued for later this week in parts of SA and NSW, as a ridge of atmospheric pressure shifts to the east, delivering blazing heat to a broad swath of the area.

The mix of tinder-dry vegetation and relentless high temperatures creates a dangerous scenario for emergency crews.

Worldwide Climatic Events Trigger Disruption

Elsewhere, a major city was left in blackout last week after strong winds compromised the city’s power grid, with toppled trees bringing down electricity cables. The extended haze has been driven by unprecedented autumn rainfall that left soils saturated.
